With heavy heart and regret, we are announcing that Professor Dilip Kumar Sinha (commonly known as “Dilip-da”) has passed away on 2nd April, 2021. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family members and innumerous friends and followers.

Professor Sinha was one of the founder members of Ballygunge Jagadbandhu Institution Alumni Association and was actively associated with us and guided the association in different capacities throughout his life. He glorified our alumni association by assuming various important roles including secretary and Vice President.

Professor Dilip Kumar Sinha was born on 9th January 1940. His illustrious career includes many esteemed educational institutes in India. After completing Mathematics honors from Presidency College and Masters in Applied Mathematics from Calcutta University, he joined Jadavpur University, in 1960. He became the Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics of Jadavpur University. He was also the Dean of the Faculty of Science at Jadavpur University. He joined as Sir Rashbehary Ghose Professor of Applied Mathematics, University of Calcuta in 1990. Prior to this, he was the Pro Vice Chancellor in Calcutta University from 1985 to 1986. Professor Sinha was the Vice Chancellor of Visva-Bharati from 1995 to 2001.

  

Professor Dilip Kr Sinha was the eldest son of his father, Dr Bishnupada Sinha, who was a senior teacher in English in Jagadbandhu Institution between 1944 and 1957 and then in Department of English at Jadavpur University.

Professor Sinha had started his research pursuits in the area of Piezoelectricity and Magnetoelasticity in 1960 and received Ph D degree in 1964 from Jadavpur University. He has supervised more than fifty research students in different areas like Piezoelectricity, Magnetoelasticity, Magnetohydrodynamics, Mathematics Education, Biomathematics, Management sciences Nonlinear studies, Atmospheric Sciences, Oceanic Sciences, Solitons, Catastrophic Theory etc. Professor Sinha has published over 300 research papers in different journals and delivered lectures in various conferences across the globe. He was the Fellow of Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, UK, the National Academy of Sciences, and International Academy of Mathematical Chemistry.

  

Professor Sinha was actively associated with many academic and other societies in different capacities. He was the President of Calcutta Mathematical Society, Indian Mathematical Society, Indian Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Indian Society of Biomechanics, Association for Improvement of Mathematics Teaching, Science for Society, to name a few. He was the Sectional President of Mathematics, Indian Science Congress Association. He was the General President in the Annual Session of ISCA in Indore in 1991-92. Professor Sinha delivered his new research and applied interests with studies in natural disasters, in addition to environmental studies, mathematical ecology. He was also the Secretary of Indian Society of History of Mathematics. Professor Sinha was a Visiting Faculty for more than a decade in Presidency College and University of Calcutta In areas of mathematical modeling in environmental system management and marine sciences till 2018.

  

Being a prolific writer, he has published more than thousand of articles in Bengali and English and a few in Hindi on varied subjects in a large number of journals. He used to love history of institutions, persons and have been associated with a number of projects and assignments.

Professor Sinha received Rabindra Puraskar award for his book on “Paribesh O Durjog” in 2001.

Professor Dilip Kr Sinha was actively associated with many other societies like Ballygunge Institute, Dhakiria Atri Society, Science For Society, Institute for Educational Research Studies, Indian Science News Association, to name a few.

Professor Dilip Kumar Sinha will remain in our thoughts forever.
